Sustainable Cotton Supply Chain
SUPPORTING SUSTAINABLE COTTON VALUE CHAINS PROJECT
The aim of the ' SUPPORTING SUSTAINABLE COTTON VALUE CHAINS PROJECT', which started in January 2021 in cooperation with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and will be completed in December 2021, is to strengthen and expand the practices carried out within the scope of the Better Cotton Standard in Turkey.
In the project, farmers producing in Better Cotton standards, implementation partners who take important roles in this process, their agricultural engineers and ginner businesses that process Better Cotton are targeted and activities will be carried out under six main headings:
1- According to the results of soil analysis in a total of four lands, pilot studies will be carried out on subjects such as fertilization, trap planting, reducing pesticide use, soil moisture monitoring and optimizing the amount of irrigation, and the correct application of auxiliary chemicals in harvest and pilot lands will be supported by innovative and smart farming methods such as a climate station and early warning system.
2-Technical training materials on sustainable cotton production will be prepared for farmers in the Better cotton system.
3- Agricultural engineers of our implementation partners, who provide technical support to the farmers, will be trained on sustainable cotton production.
4- Local Better Cotton implementation partners will be technically supported in mapping natural resources (water, soil, biodiversity) and designing a continuous improvement plan.
5-Better Cotton ginner businesses will be trained on fiber quality, occupational health and safety, traceability, process management, and one-on-one technical support and consultancy will be given to a total of ten ginner businesses.
6- Information technology research will be conducted on digital solutions for data collection and mapping in the field.
